Despite what you lose in portability, desktop PCs have plenty to offer. They are generally cheaper and pound for pound are more powerful than laptops.
Budget desktop PCs that can handle basic tasks like word processing, browsing the Web and emails that will last you from fresher’s’ week to your graduation are available for under £300. However, if you want a PC for gaming and video editing, then a more powerful desktop will be required.
If portability isn’t an issue then desktop PCs are the way to go and with many retailers offering Back-to-College deals now is a great time to grab a bargain.
Reasons to choose a Desktop PC:
• Cost. Desktop PCs are usually cheaper and are less expensive to upgrade.
• Speed. Pound for pound desktops are faster.
• PCs are easy to upgrade. Upgrading a laptop is more difficult.
• Space concerns. Consider All-in-one desktops that have built-in components, touch screens, no base unit or Mini PCs which are roughly a third of the size of traditional PCs.
• Cheaper and easier to repair. If you spill coffee on your desktop keyboard, you just need to replace the keyboard. If you spill coffee on your laptop it is likely that it won’t be working afterwards.
• More difficult to steal than a laptop. This can be an advantage on an university campus.
Other money saving tips:
• Package deals. Look for package deals where monitor or printer is included in price.
• Bundled software. Look for deals where Microsoft Office is included. If it isn’t bundled with PC you may be able to purchase it at a reduced rate if you buy a new PC at same time.
• Windows 7. With the imminent release of Microsoft’s new operating system Windows 7 you may want to look for desktops that include a Windows 7 upgrade offer where you can upgrade for no extra charge once available.
